A Product designing and skill development workshop was organized by SETU – A bridge to Artisans for its Paper Mache artisans, based at Srinagar, Kashmir. The Group is engaged in making beautiful and unique artefacts from recycled paper, which are then hand painted in fine traditional & modern designs.
The objective of the one month long training program was to engage underprivileged women in the craft so as to open livelihood opportunities for them. Also, it aimed to improve the designing skills of artisans and make them aware of the current product design trends appealing to the target market. A total of ten women artisans participated in the workshop. The entire outlay of the program was borne by SETU and the women who participated were also awarded a stipend. The participants were really happy with the efforts of SETU and Fair Trade Family too lauds the efforts of SETU for conducting the workshop amidst the unrest and tension in the beautiful valley. The inhabitants of this beautiful state are eagerly searching for new employment opportunities as the political unrest and tensions have led to low tourists inflows.
